Kettlercise

A kettlebell is a cast-iron weight shaped like a cannon ball with a handle on the top. It is thought that they originated in Russia in the 18th century as a tool for weighing crops and then started to be used for strength athletics in the late 19th century.

Unlike a dumb-bell, the kettlebell has an offset centre of gravity which makes it ideal for swinging movements which build strength and endurance in the core, back, legs and upper body. Typical exercises such as swings, snatches and cleans use several muscle groups making them truly ‘whole body’ movements.

Kettlercise is based on the traditional side of kettlebell training combined with modern-day sport science with the goal of promoting fat loss and body tone.

The exercises are dynamic and load-bearing but there is no impact (no jumping) and no complicated choreography to learn. The basic movement patterns mimic real life movements such as pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, twisting, squatting and lunging making this a truly functional exercise class.

Spinning

Spinning classes can be a great way to get in a vigorous workout, burning calories and keeping your muscles in shape - especially during the off-season.

Pros include:

  • An effective workout

  • It allows you to train in the offseason

  • Varied routines keep things fresh

  • It's great for all ability levels

A spinning class involves lots of people on exercise bikes lined up inside in a fitness studio. It is a relatively recent phenomenon, where participants take part in a group workout on exercise bikes that typically lasts anywhere from 30-75 minutes. The classes are lead by instructors who normally guide participants through a series of phases, from warm-up to more challenging phases, to a period of peak effort followed by a cool down.

Ultimately participants determine their own levels of exertion but a good instructor can certainly encourage and motivate you to push yourself, and you'll most likely find spinning to be a vigorous workout.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

As you can tell from the name HIIT is challenging. It takes your cardio workout to another level and out of your comfort zone.

You can use HIIT with any type of cardio workout, whether it's running, using a stair climbing machine, rowing, or jumping rope.

You’ll work up a sweat fast, working at a very intense level and then backing off for a slower recovery period, followed by another round of high intensity.

That strategy can save you time: You don't have to work out as long as you would if you were keeping a steady pace.

You’ll lose weight, build muscle, and boost your metabolism. Plus there’s a post-workout bonus: Your body will burn calories for about 2 hours after you exercise.
